The Fortunato Devils from Romania just lost the Ice Hockey Men’s 30+ final game against Dom's Hockey Innsbruck with a close match ending in a 3-2 victory for the Dom’s.
Both the Dom’s, playing in their hometown, and Fortunato deserved to be in the finals, they were absolutely the strongest teams leading the tables after the preliminaries and also the semi-finals were a large win for both teams.
In the preliminaries, the Dom’s and Fortunato already had an encounter, which ended in a clear 4-1 victory for the Dom’s, so the Dom’s came in as clear favourite for the gold.
However, after the 2nd period, gold was getting out of sight as Fortunato had a strong offensive play resulting in two goals supported by their outstanding Goal keeper Farkas Zoltan, who miraculously managed to keep his goal clean in these first two periods. So after 30 minutes of play Fortunato was leading the game with 0-2.
At the start of the third period, Fortunato seemed already to be in ‘party-mode’ and the Dom’s finally got their act together, as everything turned very fast. Right from the start of the 3rd period, the Dom’s got a fierce grip on the play, and Fortunato was being pushed with their back’s onto the wall, resulting in several time penalties. The Dom’s fully utilized the power play so they managed to equalize the scores within 4 minutes. After this, both teams were throwing in their best which resulted in a beautiful and high quality play that was a joy for the enthusiastic crowd.
With just 3 minutes to go, the Fortunato’s gave all and pushed the Dom’s back into the defence with an attack that should have earned them the victory. But the cross bar prevented the score and the marvellous slap shot bounced back into the field. The crowd was preparing for a round of shoot-outs, when M. Lautsch of the Dom’s made the decisive goal.
With just minutes to go, Fortunato’s fortune was up and the Dom's took the gold home.
The Dom’s captain said: „We stayed cool, did not let it get us down, scored goals and thus won and the gold medal. The organization of the tournament was great, it's all amazing how everything is organized - from back to front. It would have been great if more teams had participated. “
Throughout the match, the teams were supported by a large crowd which cheered enthusiastically from start to finish with the aid of home-made flags, team hats and drums. The onlookers erupted from their seats after every goal and chants could be heard from all corners of the stadium.
In the Bronze medal final, the team Brisbane Rusty Blades from Australia took third place.
The Brisbane Rusty Blades captain told us:”We caught the bronze. It is better than 4th place and it is not 7th. The tournament was extremely well organized and we enjoyed every bit of it. The participants were treated so well, Innsbruck and the facilities are beautiful and obviously the beer is great too! We come from all over the world and it was worth the travel”.
