Not only the Winter World Master Games are keeping Innsbruck excited this week – the Tyrolean School Winter Games are taking place on January 14th and 15th.
Around 1000 students aged 12 – 19 take part in this event as spectators or compete in the games themselves. What it is all about is the love of sport and team spirit. The students not only start in disciplines like ski racing and ice hockey, they also get to know new sports like curling or team ice skating.
The Tyrolean School Winter games - which take place already the third time – took off with the ice hockey competition. The eight school-teams competing are cheered on by the fans that have come from all over Tyrol – like these students from the Brixental Valley who cross their fingers for their ice hockey friends. They themselves take part in the curling competition because their school considers the School Winter Games to be a good way to strengthen the community.
Whoever thinks for the students it’s only about a day off from school is wrong! The numerous students emphasize that for them it’s the fun and joy of sports that brought them here. This is also the spirit of the team of the NMS (secondary school) of Zirl, a town close to Innsbruck. The students call their town an “Ice Hockey town”.
At the same time just outside Olympiaworld at fresh temperatures the speed skating takes place. The chilliness can not affect the good spirit. The NMS Hötting has brought a roaring fan club with homemade signs that stand out from the excited crowd. If that does not motivate the five teams, what else could?!
At 2 PM the students are honoured with a goodie bag and a certificate. From the faces of the children one can guess that they will surely be back to take part next time!
