Ganghoferlauf: Cross-Country Skiing and Rock ´n´Roll into old age

Ganghoferlauf: Cross-Country Skiing and Rock ´n´Roll into old age

The Ganghoferlauf takes place the 49th time this year and is a place to be for many international Cross-Country skiers and for the Winter World Masters Games team. We visited the great event, which is part of the Euroloppet, from 09th to 10th of March in Leutasch, Tyrol.
After the races, we got to know the likable 81 years old Karl from Rosenheim. The German is a professional pastry cook. His passion for Cross-Country Skiing started when he made a bet with his friends. The Starnberger See is the fifth largest sea in Germany with a scope of 49 kilometers (30.44 miles). Together with his friends, he asked himself the question of how to walk around the lake without touching the ground with your feet. It must be possible to ski around the lake on Cross-Country Skis. So, he started to bet his friends on that. He made it and won but what really made us stunning was that this was the start of the never-ending passion for Cross-Country Skiing.
I am trying to avoid the retirement home as long as possible. That´s why I need Cross-country Skiing and Rock ´n´ Roll dancing.

It seems like Karl never stopped skating since he started in 1964. His agenda at Cross-Country competitions is long: 13 times König Ludwig Race, 11 times races in Leutasch, and 57 times he took part in a marathon. His passion for Cross-Country Skiing knows no boundaries. In 1972, Karl was part of one of the worlds´ biggest Cross-Country races. At the Wasa Lauf in Sweden, he finished it in 5 hours and 25 minutes 90 kilometres (55.92 miles).
Ganghoferlauf´s starting area
Although, nobody of his family ever liked Cross-country Skiing he loved it from the very beginning. Still, every winter the Cross-Country area Seefeld is known as his living room. “I know every path there”, he told us. Karl is trying to avoid the retirement home as long as possible. That´s why he needs Cross-Country Skiing, which is even better in combination with Rock ´n´ Roll dancing. Sometimes he is doing both on the same day. He just loves dancing and movement and that´s why the 81-year-old today still attends concerts with his daughter.
