Golden Roof

Innsbruck‘s most famous symbol in the heart of the oldtown

Innsbruck’s most famous symbol is the Golden Roof in the middle of the city’s oldtown. This roof covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles was build by Emperor Maximilian I. so he could observe the regular tournaments in the oldtown from above and receive thanks and praise from his people.

The relief on the front of the balcony shows Emperor Maximilian I with his two wives: Bianca Maria Sforza and Maria of Burgundy, his first wife.
